What to wear to a hammam, and where the tattoos are a problem.
Nobody explains this at the door. A Turkish bath hands you a pestemal and expects you in it, and only in it. A Japanese onsen wants you with nothing on at all, washing seated at a low tap first, and most houses still turn visible tattoos away. Hammams run ninety minutes, not thirty. Thermal palaces expect your own towel, flip-flops and a padlock. Heat and a heavy lunch do not mix, and heat and pregnancy need a doctor first.
Three treatments that only work where they were invented.
A massage table is a massage table anywhere. A kese scrub on a heated marble slab, a communal pool fed by a volcano, and two hours of Balinese pressure work in an open pavilion are not.
The Turkish Bath
You sit in the steam until the skin gives, then lie face up on the gobek tasi, the heated marble slab in the middle of the room, while an attendant works you over with a kese mitt. What comes off is visible and mildly appalling. Foam follows, poured from a pillowcase, then cold water over the head and a glass of tea. Ninety minutes in Istanbul. Marrakesh swaps the foam for black soap and rhassoul clay, and finishes with argan oil.

The Onsen
Volcanic water, communal pools, and rules that are not up for discussion. You wash sitting down at a low tap before you get in, you go in with nothing on, the small towel never touches the water, and most houses still turn away visible tattoos. Get it right and it is the best hour in the country, often outdoors, often for the price of a coffee, sometimes with snow on the rail.

The Balinese Massage
Long strokes with warm coconut oil and thumb pressure along lines the therapist has been working since she was a teenager. Bookings run two hours, not one, and usually end with a flower bath or a scrub. In Ubud the pavilion is open on two sides and the rice terrace is the only noise. The Thai version is drier and harder, with stretching where the oil would be.
